This old school building was built about the same time as the Red Hill School, circa 1927, by Julius Rosenwald, as a school for black children on the north side of Lake Martin. It was one of about 5,000 school buildings built for black children around the south to help them hard times the Jim Crow laws in the south were putting on the facilities for educating black children. It was closed when the local schools were desegregated. The area where it is located used to be called Benson, after John Benson, a local former slave entrepreneur who made many improvements for black people in this area.
