Preserving the Past, Providing for the Present and Preparing for the Future.
This is the Horse Stump, located at the northeast side of the Refuge Church cemetery. The original Refuge Church building was a wooden structure and was located on the knoll in the middle of the cemetery. It was said that one of the men of the original church cut the nearby tree to form a stump so that the ladies who rode horses to church, and many did, could dismount with less difficulty, dropping to the stump and then descending to the ground. What is left of the stump is well over 125 years old. A photo of a lady preparing to use this stump during the dedication of this monument is found in the "People of the Past" section.
