These two well dressed gentlemen are, from left to right. McDuffie(Duff) Kennedy, who was born in July of 1878 and died on October 17th, 1948, and Jabez(Jabe) Kennedy who was born on October 30, 1883. They were the sons of Benjamin Franklin Kennedy and Haseltine McInnish Kennedy. In the 1940's they lived in a wooden frame house up on the hill and across the road from the rock faced house of their cousin, Carl Jefferson Kennedy, the one with the "K" on the chimney today. This editor is not aware if they were ever married. Jabe did not like indoor bathrooms, nor eating outside on picnics. On the occasion of one of my visits, probably around 1946, I was telling Jabe about the new house my step-father was building for our family and that it would have an indoor bathroom rather than an outhouse. He seemed somewhat incensed at this information and stated "Times is gettin' bad when folks start eatin' outside de house and goin' to do their business inside de house.

Duff did not like to ride in cars unless he could ride sitting in the trunk with his legs hanging out, as he did with a mule and wagon.

There was one occasion when my cousin, Bobby Jack Hall was at their home around lunch time. They were going to have beans and cornbread and they invited him have some of their fare with them. Bobby noticed that all the plates on the table were turned upside down, with the food side of the plate facing the table surface. He thought that this might be to keep the dust and flies from the eating surface of the plates, indicating a concern for cleanliness he had not anticipated, given the general unkempt condition of the home. They flipped three of the plates over to receive the corn bread and beans. Bobby thought the food was pretty good and was looking around to see where he might take his plate to be washed after he had finished eating the food. It was then that he observed Duff licking his plate surface clean with his tongue. Once the plate was spotless due to the tongue washing Duff had given it, he again turned the plate upside down and set it back down on the table at his place and got up and left. Bobby said he never did eat with Duff & Jabe again.

I grew up 100 feet from their house, but they were long gone by this time. We used to swing in a basket hanging from the rafters.
